ACRES WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTRE

PROJECT METHODS

Engaging Singaporeans in protecting animals
“You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.”
- Winston Churchill

There is an urgent need to provide Singaporeans with more hands-on opportunities to help animals. A letter to The Straits Times Forum on 28th June 2006 (“More hands-on opportunities needed to curb animal abuse”) highlighted the need for such opportunities. The writer stressed the need to involve our youth and volunteers in conservation projects to allow them to have a personal stake in protecting the region's biodiversity.

He concluded that “Only when we personally witness how our actions have helped an endangered species can there be a positive influence on how we view our non-human counterparts.”

ACRES will accept local volunteers to help with the daily running of the AWRC and the volunteer programme will complement the educational aspect of the AWRC.

The programme will provide Singaporeans with a hands-on opportunity to work with wildlife and take an active step to improve the welfare of animals and tackle the illegal wildlife trade.

Through these active efforts, the volunteers will develop a better understanding of animal welfare issues and play a more active role in the local animal welfare and conservation movement.

School students will be able to volunteer at the centre as part of their Community Involvement Programme (CIP).

The volunteers at the AWRC will assist with:

The daily cleaning of the enclosures.
The preparation of food and enrichment for the animals.
The running of the education programme for schools and the public guided tours.
The general maintenance of the AWRC.

Volunteers will be provided with lodging at the AWRC volunteer house.

In addition, paying volunteers from other countries will be recruited through international volunteer agencies. Once the rescue centre is in operation, ACRES will approach two such agencies, namely the Global Volunteer Network and Ecovolunteer.

Help us make a difference in the lives of the animals.

As animals cannot speak up for themselves, it is up to humans to give them a voice, speak up their behalf and end their abuse.
