NEWS ACRES IN THE NEWS "Call of the wild" A new hotline has been set up by animal rights group Animal Research and Concerns Society (Acres) for members of the public to report illegal trade in and keeping of exotic pets. The move is part of the group’s Wild But Not Free Campaign. Active Acres volunteer Gillian Tan (pictured), an actress who appeared in local drama series Durian King, summed up the purpose of the month-long campaign in the Central Business District. “Animals can’t speak for themselves,” she said. “We are their voices and have to protect them.” Acres was formed in 2001 and is supported by Saatchi and Saatchi and the Lee Foundation. The hotline number is 9783-7782. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority makes regular seizures of protected species from smugglers. ......................................................................................................................................................... |
