Shark at Condo

The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society has raised concerns about a shark being kept at Parc Palais Condominium at Upper Bukit Timah.

The marine-themed condominium has a nurse shark and two black tip reef sharks in their possession.

The society is strongly against the private ownership of sharks as pets.

President and Executive Director, Louis Ng.

“ Especially in this case the nurse shark because they can grow up to 4 metres long and the shark currently at the condominium is already 2 metres long and keeping a 2 metre long shark in such a small thing is really compromising its welfare.”

The sharks are also threats to public safety.

“Access to the aquarium where the sharks are kept is actually open. Its not locked. The residents can climb and touch the sharks unsupervised. So I think its an accident waiting to happen.”

They met the management of the condominium yesterday.

“We proposed that they move the shark to Underwater World Singapore where the nurse shark can have a larger enclosure. Wild animals if you want to keep them as pets you do need a licence. Technically, a shark you would require a licence to keep them. The condo doesnt have a licence. The AVA should confiscate the animal.”

Mr Ng is still waiting for condominium management to call back. He is hopeful that they take immediate steps to address concerns that are raised.
