Fundraising event for the AWRC
Shaffiq Alkhatib

The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society or ACRES has planned to raise some 30,000 dollars during its 2-day fundraising roadshow.

The money will be used to fund the construction of an animal shelter.

Known as the Acres Wildlife Rescue Centre, it will open in April next year.

Louis Ng, who is the Executive Director, says that the shelter will accommodate more than 400 animals.

He adds that these will be animals that have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.

There'll be animals like primates, gibbons, lorises, reptiles like snakes and tortoises, marsupials like sugar gliders, small civets, like leopard cats, that's about it actually. What we are envisioning is, nice openair enclosures for them because we want this to be a haven for these animals I think its time that we give something back, that we've already taken. And this centre is supposed to be a haven for them to rest and recuperate in.

The shelter will be built at Sungei Tengah.

Mr Ng says the refuge will cost more than 1 million dollars to build and maintain.

We need about 1.099 million dollars to construct the centre and to fund it for a year and we are urging the public to help us in establish this rescue centre.

The roadshow will end tomorrow.
