How to Identify Cruelty-Free Products
(toiletries, cosmetics and household products)

What is animal testing?

Hundreds of thousands of rabbits, mice, rats and other animals are poisoned, blinded and killed each year in outdated and unnecessary experiments to test ingredients for new cosmetics, toiletries, household cleaners and other household products.

These experiments involve cruel and painful procedures such as dripping concoctions into animals’ eyes and rubbing substances into raw, shaved skin to check for reactions. Not to mention force-feeding animals with chemicals until they are poisoned and die.

And it’s not like these tests are useful. There are already 8000 ingredients known to be safe and effective. In addition, there is a range of safety testing alternatives to animal testing which do not involve animals, such as using tissue cultures and in-vitro tests.

Thankfully, there are companies out there that have chosen to be compassionate. Some have put an end to animal testing. Others have never tested on animals. And it’s these companies that we request you to support.

How can we identify products that haven’t been tested on animals?

This page will help you identify stuff that has not been tested on animals and find out where to buy it in Singapore. Some of these things are also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The products produced by all of the companies/brands listed have not been tested on animals, and neither have their ingredients. These companies have been approved by one of two schemes (or sometimes both):

• Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS)/ Humane Household Products Standard (HHPS) (international).
• Choose Cruelty Free (Australia-based).

Products that conform to the Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS)/ Humane Household Products Standard (HHPS) often bear a leaping bunny logo. Do note, however, that the leaping bunny may not always be printed on the products.

The HCS and HHPS schemes were established in 1996 by an international coalition of animal protection groups from Europe and North America, including the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV). A company approved by either of these schemes no longer tests or commissions animal testing for its products.
Choose Cruelty Free (CCF) is an Australian- based, independent, non-profit organisation which accredits companies which do not test their products or ingredients on animals for cosmetics, toiletries and household products.

How you can help end product testing on animals.

• Only buy products which have not been tested on animals.
• Write to supermarkets and retailers asking them to stock more products which have not been tested on animals; i.e that are HCS/HPPS or CCF approved.
• Write to manufacturers of cosmetics, toiletries and household products which are not approved under these schemes. Tell them you will not buy their products until they are HCS, HPPS or CCF approved.
• Spread the word. Make your friends and family aware of animal testing and of the cruelty-free products which are available.
