RAISING AWARENESS ON THE ILLEGAL TRADE
IN BEAR PARTS AND THE CRUELTY BEHIND THE
BEAR BILE INDUSTRY.
Once a consumer demand for bear products became apparent after the 2001 undercover investigations, ACRES, in collaboration with WSPA, set about an ongoing public awareness campaign, highlighting the fact that not only was the trade in bear products illegal in Singapore, but also stressing the extreme cruelty inflicted on the bears at the bear farms from which bear bile and gall bladders are obtained. The aim of the campaign is to make people aware of the cruelty involved in bear farming, encourage them to use herbal alternatives to bear bile and therefore reduce demand for bear bile products.
The illegal trade in bear parts and the cruelty of bear farming has been mentioned in numerous ACRES talks all over Singapore, especially at schools and universities.
A life-size mechanical bear in a cage supplied by WSPA depicting life on a bear farm for thousands of bears has also travelled to ACRES talks and roadshows all over Singapore. The bear serves as an effective tool to graphically illustrate the extreme cruelty of farming bears for their bile.
Since the beginning of the campaign, several people who did take bear bile products informed ACRES that after learning of the extreme suffering endured by the bears, they would no longer take these products. Since 2001, thousands of Singaporeans signed have a pledge never to use bear bile, bear gall bladders or other products derived from bears.
Support our efforts to end bear farming.
