ANIMAL FRIENDLY TOURISM

In 2001 Acres launched a campaign entitled “Are You an Animal Friendly Tourist?”

Many Singaporeans travel overseas on holiday, especially to countries in Asia where animals are widely exploited for profit in many different ways by the tourist industry.

The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness on how, as tourists, people’s money may support trades and events that profit from animal suffering, pain and death. It also explained how, when on holiday, people can enjoy the beauty of nature and rich cultural traditions of the countries visited without taking part in activities that harm animals.

Exhibition panels that gave a compassionate person's guide to a cruelty-free holiday were used and displayed a checklist of ways be an animal-friendly tourist. The panels described how the following activities had a negative impact on animal welfare:

Participating in Animal photography sessions
Going to see performing animal shows
Visiting live animal markets
Watching cockfights
Visiting zoos and marine parks
Buying souvenirs made from animals
Eating exotic meat
Participating in animal rides

As animals cannot speak up for themselves, it is up to humans to give them a voice, speak up their behalf and end their abuse.
